Sri Lanka's wild elephants, dry-zone forests, migratory corridors, and cultural landscapes form an interconnected living heritage.
The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is a keystone species across the island's landscapes. Only a small percentage of male elephants in Sri Lanka carry tusks, making every wild tusker an irreplaceable part of our natural lineage. Through seed dispersal and habitat shaping, elephants sustain the health of the forest for countless other species.
Sri Lanka's dry-zone forests and ancient village tank cascades (Ellanga Gammana) have sustained both rural communities and wild elephant herds for over two millennia. Protecting forest catchments around these reservoirs ensures wild elephants have natural access to forage and water throughout the dry season.
Elephants follow generational memory along ecological corridors linking national parks and forest reserves. Preserving and restoring these corridors allows tuskers and herds to move safely between seasonal feeding grounds without isolation.
Sustainable conservation protects both the safety of rural farming communities and the lives of wild elephants. Effective coexistence relies on community-managed seasonal fencing, early-warning systems, and well-equipped mobile veterinary units capable of rapid care when wild elephants are injured.
In Sri Lanka, natural heritage and cultural heritage belong to a single living civilization. Protecting our wild tuskers and forests today is an act of responsibility toward both our history and future generations.
